A young American student travels to China and lives in a Taoist temple for two years where he discovers that he is the reincarnation of a Chinese general who was killed in that temple centuries earlier. From the monks, he learns about religion, metaphysics and military strategy and eventually must put this knowledge to use when he has to battle the reincarnated enemy who originally killed him and has come back to kill him again.
