By 1966, St Joseph Missouri had already seen over a hundred years of intense history. Once a town of millionaires and gothic mansions, it whispered its dying dreams to me, a nine-year-old boy born with the ability to see and hear and remember everything, but with a tragic flaw. One block away was another boy of the same age, lost and lonely, with his own sad secret. Something pulled us together for one short summer, to be each other’s best friends and each other’s healers, so that I could stretch the boundaries of time, and prevent a gruesome tragedy, even if it meant my own slide into psychotic distress. This is a story that twists memory and imagination into an inseparable reality where I could learn to face what was locked inside me and change two futures.
