The power of the attraction, however, stems from long before that, all the way back to the beginning. Possessed by spirits portrayed as birds and animals in the creation myth of the Chalone Tribe, they converge, as always, in the present, with the primal desire to create and nurture material existence. But an opposite force is also at work in an equally powerful spirit, a demon intent on annihilating existence altogether.
