The grand opening of Shirley's, a new, exclusive jazz venue in Dallas, draws the reader directly into the lives of the principal characters. Robert, a black man who retired on his self-made fortune, and Scott, a white man who was married to the late, great, black jazz singer Shirley, come together to co-create Shirley's. Aset, the now reigning jazz chanteuse, was a dear friend of Shirley's. Deacon the house band leader was a colleague of Shirley's for years. Marilyn, the beautiful and elegant MC, and Jenine, the foxy, hot white girl who is the head bartender, also knew Shirley, as did others. Throughout the three nights of the club's opening, all believe they "see" Shirley, fleetingly, saluting their accomplishments with her namesake club.
