Forces of good and evil converge when history professor Joseph Hoffman dies while decorating his Christmas tree. At his interment service on a frosty Boston day, his assistant and granddaughter, Miriam Hoffman, receives a cryptic note referring her to documents that will lead her to a famous relic, the Spear of Longinus, the sword used to pierce the side of the dying Christ during his execution. Whoever holds the relic holds the key to earthly power. Its infamous and dubious owners include rulers and conquerors, Emperor Constantine, Charlemagne and Adolph Hitler. Soon Miriam is propelled into a race against evil forces who wish to possess this greatest treasure of treasures. Miriam is aided by her childhood friend, Vatican scholar Manuel Gaspar and former college roommate, Virgillia Jenkins to decode an ancient vellum page written in Coptic in order to find the Spear. German Cardinal Eberhart- a former Nazi who is risen to power in the Vatican, the Muslim Brotherhood of Assassins and a Neo-pagan war cult from Sweden also want the powerful relic for their own pursuit of power. Miriam and her team are only a few steps ahead of these forces that would use the Spear for destruction and death, as they follow the leads that take them from Boston to Rome and into the legendary underground cities of Cappadocia.
