BOOK ONE OF THE WILDCRY SERIES Beneath the hustle and bustle of everyday civilization so many things go unnoticed. Whilst you get the kids to school, head out to work, even sitting in front of your television staring blankly at its flickering face. But every now and again, something happens that makes you feel different. Something changes, if only for an instant. The hairs on the back of your neck rise up and your palms sweat for no reason. Your family pet reacts - the normally playful puppy, tail between its legs, bolts for the door as if struck by lightning. You suspect something is wrong – everyone knows animals act strangely before earthquakes. Your feet feel odd against the floor as you run. Your puppy is huddled in the corner, its eyes wide looking into the space behind you. You watch its body shiver as it urinates all over the kitchen tiles, terrified. You look into its unblinking eyes as it peers up at you for a moment. Your gaze catches a reflection of rapid movement. It was almost too fast to register. The thought of an impending earthquake disappears. That wasn’t your reflection you saw, that wasn’t even you. For an instant, the movement pauses in your dog’s eyes. You see the reason your skin is now crawling. Why your stomach is twisting in tightening knots. You and your dog both blink at the same time and the reflection vanishes forever, along with the claws that had been starting to scrape out the inside of your skull. Abruptly calm, you dismiss it as nothing more than some trick of the light and return to your television, puppy scampering happily at your heels, the puddle it made now gone as if never made in the first place. Instinctively your mind erases the memory as if it had simply been a dream. Civilization has been blunting your mind since the day you were born. If you could fathom it greater than the occasional moment, what do you think would happen… ...if you suddenly sharpened up?
