They come at us with an intent to kill, not gun toting or spear throwing, and they won't be swinging a sword but with microscopic infestations of bacteria or viruses. For centuries, nobody has figured out to stop the killers or where they come from. So who sent these little killers that seem to be stalking humans as prey? Nobody really knows. Science may eventually knock them down, but they always seem to come back again. Many speculate on the origins. Some say from animals, but even if they came from animals, how did the animals get and harbor them? Were they introduced like soldiers wearing masking camouflage? We know they're out there, but they can't be seen, heard, or felt until they attack. These things continually evade our understanding.Pandemics aren't a new thing. Since the beginning of humankind, there have been silent killers spreading worldwide. The first know pandemic was in about 165 AD. The Antonine Plague killed about 5 million people, about the same as the current Covid-19 but with a worldwide population of just 200 million versus the 1.7 billion in 2021.There have been other historic plagues like the Black Death (Bubonic Plague), killing an estimated 200 million. Cholera, Yellow Fever, the Russian, Spanish, Asian, and Hong Kong flu, not to mention MERS, SARS, HIV, Ebola, and Swine Flu were sent our way. Some believe they come from God to punish evil. Science has a different view. In 2008 Ed Rybicki, a virologist at the University of Cape Town in South Africa wrote in "Scientific American" the following:"At the end of the day, however, despite all of their common features and unique abilities to copy and spread their genomes, the origins of most viruses may remain forever obscure."Maybe the mystery is held out there in Forrest Labs.
