The Unseen & Other Stories

The Unseen & Other Stories collects four of the author’s recently published ebooks for the first time in one collected volume. Conceived as a single title, each of the four novellas is interlinked thematically but are also standalone narratives in their own right. They all explore similar ideas – how fear can cause people to act in certain ways, how they can be confined by their environments, and how what they fear most is often unknown to them. Each character in these four stories reaches an epiphany by the end, even if it is a terrible one. In The Unseen, two boys move into an apartment with their newly separated mother. The trauma of what has happened to them during their parents’ separation is played out in games that ratchet up their fear. In Sète, a man and a wife travel to France for a much-needed holiday but their sunny idyll soon turns into a nightmarish parody in which their marriage begins to unravel. In Blood, a dying man tells his nurse an astonishingly elaborate story, which may or may not be true but must be told in any case. In Hikikomori, a young woman finds herself working in a strange situation that has her fantasising about a mysterious figure who lives upstairs.
