In this novella, Dylan and his father both drown as Dylan’s father fulfills his son’s twelfth birthday wish to learn to surf. Dylan’s father’s body is never found but Dylan is pulled from the ocean and revived after several minutes underwater. Dylan, his younger sister and mother move from San Diego, California to his mother’s small hometown of Glasgow, Michigan, where Dylan is visited by people he comes to realize are in the process of passing over from life into death. Along the way, he learns how people’s philosophies and attitudes about life, death and the people in their lives effect their final transitions and, possibly, beyond. Includes stunningly surreal afterlife imagery.
