Hit man Jack Conlin, returning from a job, wanders into a small Midwestern town that isn't on the map. He discovers the centrality of a mythic figure there: the Bone Man, a moving, dancing skeleton who appears, without fail, in the annual Hallowe'en parade. Intrigued by the town's devotion to this impossible apparition, Conlin decides to see for himself just what will happen as darkness falls and the parade lights begin to glow.
