In the land of Inland, Freya Lightwater has endured much loss and grief in her nineteen years, becoming a reckless adventure seeking girl, but her troubles are only beginning after she decides to sneak into The Backlands, originally the land of the Fae, now known as a place where those who have betrayed the ways of Inland have been banished, along with the previous Crown Prince, Thomas, and his family in a war many years before. She sets out to prove the Backlanders are not evil but starts to learn that the darkness dwelling in that land has a life of its own. While in the Backlands, she meets the banished royals, including Queen Breda, now a cold, broken queen, and their son, Marcas. As Marcas and Freya become closer, she learns exactly how the darkness can consume those who allow it, Fae and Mortal alike. To save Marcas, and herself, from the forces which seek to destroy them, Freya must venture with snarky Fae warriors and mistrusting mortal soldiers to not only save those she cares for, but to learn just what happens when one allows themself to be consumed by grief.
