Charon's Children

George Fitrakis flees to the island of Crete after the death of a woman to whom he supplied adulterated drugs. Following a devastating accident he encounters Charon, a strange and surly old fisherman who will have a profound effect on his life. When George agrees to accompany Charon on a trip to the deserted island of Spinalonga he embarks on more than a simple journey to a tourist spot. He is forced to confront his shortcomings as a predator of the weak and vulnerable when he finds himself living an unimaginable and horrific new life of hardship, pain and suffering. Can he find redemption in the eyes of ancient Gods as he joins a desperate community, determined against all odds to survive on Spinalonga, the ‘Island of the Damned’? As he discovers warmth, love, humour and courage amongst the island’s people will an ultimate act of selflessness and bravery change the direction of his life?Charon’s Children combines a chapter of history that continues to inspire visitors to Spinalonga, also known as “The Island of Tears,” with elements of the present day. Those who visit its atmospheric shores cannot fail to experience the still palpably tragic yet inspiring story that continues to haunt and captivate those who flock to the island each year.
