Maije endures a difficult time, growing up amongst his peers. The stigma he suffers amongst his peers stems from the circumstance surrounding his birth – his mother had died while giving birth to him, and he had survived. He was an Ogbanje – (Evil child). He decides to look for his mother in Amala-Egazi. He and his friend Chigbogu encounter lots of upheavals, in the course of their journey to the land of the dead. Maije’s friend almost dies in the process. They eventually make it to the land of the dead and Maije is stunned by what they discovered.
