The Hallowed Sisters reign over all of Sol Solum. By their command, Renn’s mother, and all adults born in Mother Maestro, are snatched from their families and imprisoned. Some in Hammertown call his mother a witch. Many say that those from Mother Maestro, the Pagans, are to blame for the shadow that covers Sol Solum: the diseases Pitch Bite and Mangle Death; and strange disappearances and horrific happenings. After all the men and women from Mother Maestro have been imprisoned, the children are next. When Hammertown, a town of steam and machines, is targeted, Renn and his father flee and head to his mother's home country - a land of mountains, wildcats, bears, boars and wolves. The Brothers, the agents of the Hallowed Sisters, intervene and Renn is captured. A series of terrifying encounters put Renn on a path to empowerment and hope. From the head of the dead comes the Light. The Light changes the boy into the Hunter. Some call him Last Hunter. Some call him the last hope. The fate of the world relies on an unlikely trio: Renn - a boy with an old, thought lost, power. Driven by the need to be reunited with his parents. A girl released from enslavement. She maintains a bond with the Darkness that is sure to betray them. Revenge for what they did to her is always in her thoughts. A dying man, a lost soul, who seeks redemption by training, advising and revealing the origins of the Darkness to Renn, while also seeking forgiveness for the foolish acts that drove his daughter away. They will find that the Darkness is real - it is buried, hidden and living in the flesh of others.
