Spite: The Biding Time Series

Curt has a disorder with no known cause or cure, as do many of his friends within the "Disability Alliance" at his high school until he contacts an obscure energy healer who unlocks his new, exceptional abilities. The source and cause of his disability is a dark, parasitic energy form, the "Archon" that gains power from absorbing these abilities from Curt and then his Alliance friends, and spreads terror by sending them "death clocks" through his followers.

About the Author

Carl Luepker has had Dystonia for 35 years, a progressive movement disorder that causes abnormal muscle contractions. When he heard his son Liam was diagnosed, it felt like the unlikely genetic curse would continue but now through the innocent eyes of their child. This prompted him to get Deep Brain Stimulation, an invasive brain surgery that placed electrodes near his Global Pallidus while he was awake. The surgery did not cure his Dystonia but it relieved some of the tremors that had become unbearable. Liam had a similar surgery just seven months later on both sides of his brain, and the procedure appears to have both reversed some of his symptoms and halted the progression. Carl wrote an article that appeared on the front page of the health and science section of the Washington Post entitled "My Heart Breaks 80 Million Ways". Prior to the surgery, during his twenty year teaching career at Title One funded schools he wrote his first book entitled "Spite", with his left thumb. It is the first novel in a three part "Biding Time" series. Carl lives with his wife Heather, daughter Lucia and son Liam in their South Minneapolis home.
