Blood Test is a vampire novel by Sarah R. Shaber, who is best known as the award-winning author of the Louise Pearlie World War II mysteries. The chilling tale begins when small town dentist James Godwin and his wife, Shelley, attend a rock concert and spot a young man who is the perfect image of James' brother, who disappeared twenty years ago. But this man is only twenty, while James' brother would be nearly forty if he were alive. James' brother's doppelganger turns out to be a destitute student, Carl Miller, who also has a disabling disease. In sympathy, and because of Carl's uncanny resemblance to his brother, James takes Carl under his wing. At first Carl is universally liked in James' small town, but a series of disturbing incidents occur, which brings Carl, the odd stranger, to the attention of the local sheriff, and causes a deep rift between James and Shelley. Evidence mounts that Carl may be responsible for two grisly deaths, while gossip about his peculiar lifestyle turns the town against him. And despite all reason, James begins to think of Carl as his brother. Even when James learns the stunning truth about Carl he cannot bring himself to abandon the young man. The sheriff, reinforced by state troopers, is determined to capture or kill Carl. James has to decide whether to risk everything, even Shelley, to help him escape.
