A year of odd events, according to Dora: A meteorite ball falls into her front yard. World War II has affected the tiny town in which she lives, and a ferry accident on the nearby Ohio River has killed four, leading many to question whether it was deliberate. Dora Flanary was never one to take the limelight. She is middle-aged, hard working and brooks no nonsense. She is married to the town Sheriff of this little Kentucky town. After months of investigations into the lives of the victims, the ferry incident is determined to be an accident. But odd events are still occurring. In what the local newspaper calls the work of a 'ghoul,' someone has broken open the grave of one of the victims, stealing a ring of the corpse's finger. The dead girl was rumored to have been pregnant. Even stranger, someone attempts to kill Dora by hitting her with the meteorite ball which she kept in her home. This murderous attempt keeps Dora in a coma for some time, as she experiences a vision in which her ancestors as well as the victims of the ferry give her messages. Even stranger, the town's willful preacher tries to prove that God has chosen to destroy the four victims for their sins. At last, her attempted murderer is revealed, and the court day for sentencing arrives. Dora, in court, openly refutes her perpetrator's defense. Finally, she and her husband go back to the Ohio River, throwing the meteorite ball into the depths of the river. It disappears into the gray water.
