A young boy finds his great grandfather's diary hidden in a shed at the beginning of summer break. The boy has the same name as his great grandfather and they have a lot in common as he will learn (even dreaming the same dreams). He reads an account of how his great grandfather saw Whitey (the White River Monster), sees Whitey himself, and eventually publishes the story as a life-changing summer in his life. The reader is drawn into and becomes part of the story itself at the end of the book.
