The confluence of cinema and comic books is a frequently raised subject, but now veteran motion-picture storyboard artist Pete Von Sholly bridges the gap once again! Morbid Volume 2, the sequel to last year's groundbreaking publication, blurs the line between these two mediums even further. Von Sholly takes the time-honored European "fumetti" method to its next level with custom-sculpted models, costumed actors, and computer-generated special effects! The stories themselves run the gamut from tongue-in-cheek lampoons of classic sci-fi movies to gut-wrenching horror in the Lovecraft tradition. The future of graphic storytelling may well be in Pete Von Sholly's Morbid!
From Booklist
Few parodists have their target's number like Von Sholly. Gigantic beasts, hideous space aliens, and putrescent reanimated corpses abound in this parody of cheap horror movies. The human characters mug terror, revulsion, and, in the case of the villains, slavering evil to beat the band. The color palette ranges from Jell-O to Day-Glo. Nearly every sentence ends with an exclamation point. And since photos are the basis of Von Sholly's stuff, it all looks so real! Not! The successor to Pete Von Sholly's morbid [BKL F 1 04] isn't as verbally clever, but still it's a treat all the way. An inane prequel to Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World (1912), the granddaddy of prehistoric-beast adventures; a Poltergeist/Evil Dead-ish cursed house (and cemetery) caper; a gross-out Blob knockoff ("The Loogie"); and two-count-'em-two episodes of the incredible, inflatable basset hound Hounduu are among the high points. But don't miss "THAT!" in which everyone that kid hero Davey knows is possessed by aliens. "Hey, that's Invaders from Mars!" you say. Yeah, but in black and white. Dig.
