He and his life-long unrequited love, Clia Gavaladr, prove themselves in bloody battle with the Pale Men, feral invaders from the beyond the Thronos Mountains. Along with their one-eyed Corporal, Ninetenths, and the redoubtable swordsman Ivan Storogin of the Folk, they are sent on a mission to discover the strange madness that drove the Pale Men to cross the mountains and invade the March. They soon discover their mercenary company has a history unknown even to its brutal Captain, Johannes Haucud. After their discovery in the hidden caverns under the mountain, they are haunted by terrible visions of an unknown god and its once human servant. The four companions must try to wrest themselves from a destiny that claims them against their will, to which they were each bound when they first shed blood for coin.
