Tephra is a city with a million lights, and at least twice as many shadows. It is a safe harbor for half the world, built on the ashes of an unquiet mountain. It is the most prosperous city in the nation of Orothuil, and it is a labyrinth of sinister secrets. Intrepid seekers are employed from time to time to uncover these secrets, for a suitable price. Some rely upon their wits, while others draw support from the authorities. A few gifted souls wield subtler gifts as practitioners of the arcane arts. Regardless of their methods, many of these investigators end up missing. In a place like Tephra, unearthing hidden truths is an often perilous line of work. Nathaniel Howard is an obscure detective for hire, visited by a new client on a cold winter morning. At first it’s just another case. In time it will lead him into a skein of lies and corruption, and if he finds his way to the truth it will change the city forever. The trouble is, there are always those who prefer the safety of their lies. One should always check to see what manner of devils they face, before making deals with them.
