Death is a finality, or is it? What happens when enmity lasts far beyond the grave? Iolande is pursued by the hatred of Grelen, a witch who wants blood as payment for her horrific death and uses her brother, Johann, as the instrument of vengeance. A long planned revolt of witch brides in Eleyse brings about chaos with King Alvain and Queen Elana fighting a war on two fronts as Johann seeks a wounded Iolande throughout the kingdom. One witch has found allies, the Volsinii, beyond one of the old gates, allies that have left open other gates threatening a collapse of many worlds into one that they would savage until nothing was left alive. Erose and those companions who returned to their homeland have found Volsinii already devastating the kingdoms there and now they were threatening entry into the Land. The Llona were helped back into Eleyse by Queen Elena but now were faced with more enemies striving to rip apart the kingdom. Llona and the guardians of the wells of power must unite with the royal forces to stop this catastrophe while Nedley races to stop Johann as he threatens Iolande's hiding place. She is carrying their child, the one who could be a bridge between the various inhabitants of the sentient Land of Eleyse but one whose life will end along with its mother if the bard is stopped.
