This edition, published in 1924, features the translation by Keene Wallis. His most renowned work after À rebours, the novel caused something of an uproar on its initial serialisation in L’Écho de Paris newspaper.It chronicles the story of novelist Durtal who, appalled at the mundanity and vacuity of modern society, turns his attention to the study of the Middle Ages, and subsequently uncovers and sets out to investigate a secret occult movement in operation in turn of the century France.
