Carry It Even: a Shadows of Ascendance Novel

“The Queen of the Deep stirs,” the Devil said. “She would destroy this world of yours if she could but reach it. Even now the Most High battles the Abyss. It is not my usual encouragements destroying the balance of good and evil in this world. You killed, what, fifty demons earlier this evening? Have you ever found so many on your doorstep?” Thaïs is tired. She has one job, and she’s good at it. Good enough to have been sponsored by the god of the underworld for over two thousand years. Good enough to have single-handedly kept evil at bay, to have allowed humanity to continue in relative ignorance. For twenty-five hundred years she has done her part, hunting and exterminating Lucifer’s minions in an unceasing effort to maintain the balance between good and evil here on earth. Now the Devil is at her door and he insists that without their alliance the world will spin into Chaos. Better than anyone, Thaïs knows she shouldn’t trust him. The twentieth century was a long one, even if she did sleep most of the first half away. Demonic activity had been at an all-time low as humanity sought to tear itself apart, but that’s all changed. Eons ago, the Most High bound Tiamat in the Deep. Now she struggles against her bonds, plotting her devastating return. In the face of such monstrous dominion, the endless battle between Good and Evil pales. Angels perish in the Abyss, while on earth powerful demons turn rogue, shattering Lucifer’s control and defying Hell’s natural laws, visiting horror after horror upon humanity. “I work alone.” For too long, Thaïs has kept herself mostly removed from those she protects. Humans are fragile and maybe, after all this time, she is too. Their lives are short, shorter when they’ve the misfortune of being loved by a demon hunter. Thaïs allows precious few into her life, even fewer into her world, but that distance is no longer a luxury she can indulge. To save the world from destruction, Thaïs must reconcile her own demons and learn to rely on the very people she has so long fought to keep safe.
