Dark the Halls

THE MOST TERRIFYING TIME OF THE YEAR December is for darkness. Nature wilts with the shortening days and dipping temperatures. Gray skies weep ice, and shadows rule the land. Cold winds bring ill whispers that warn us of our sins and offer glimpses beyond the grave. Huddling around fires, we ignore their wretched wisdom. Sipping hot chocolate and counting down the days until the warmth returns, we decorate our homes with blinking lights and ornamented trees while exchanging gifts and singing songs in hopes that the dreadful things lurking in the night will pass. But try as we may to fool ourselves, no matter how much we comfort the children with candy and toys, the creatures from beyond lie in wait. Above the stockings, the mantle clock chimes twelve. A frigid, swirling gust fills the room, blowing out the candles fighting against the nothingness. Glowing eyes appear—the phantoms' stories will no longer be dismissed.
