The Devil's Pool

George Sand (1804 - 1876) is the pseudonym for a leading French novelist. Sand could often be seen around Paris in male clothing. She claimed that men's clothing was cheaper, gave more freedom and was more comfortable. Sand is also known for her affair with the musician Chopin. The Devil's Pool was written in 1846. It is a pastoral novella set in the Berry region of France. The characters are peasants whose lives are closely linked together and who depend on the land. The main character is a 28 year old German widower with three children.
