The Sinclair House is a new boutique hotel in downtown Portsmouth, one of New England's old port towns. The nineteenth-century brick landmark has been completely renovated. It has all the comforts. And yet, something isn't right. Ellis Woodruff returns home to Eliot, Maine, from Chicago, for a break from her academic and personal life. She stays with her mother, who hasn't quite been herself. The job at Sinclair House seems like it will be the perfect fit for the fall and winter. What do you do when you know something is wrong, but you can't name it? When there are too many things that you can't explain? The Sinclair House has cast a shadow over too many lives. Ellis's family has its own secrets. She uncovers a sorrowful past, and faces a terrifying present.
