Is it madness, or the devil? In 15th century Spain Katerina, the beautiful daughter of an ambitious duke, refuses to obey her father when he commands her to marry a powerful, though evil tyrant for his own benefit. As punishment, he forces his daughter to become a nun at a harsh convent at the edge of the desert, where they all must take a vow of utter silence for their entire lives. Finding herself going insane from not only the silence, but also the cruelty of the sisters, in desperation Katerina wishes that she could talk to someone, anyone at all. Then a beautiful shadow that looks like the shadow of a thousand grains of sand appears before her and speaks with her about her most intimate desires. The more that Katerina speaks with the beautiful shadow, the more that she becomes aware that there are only two explanations for what she sees before her; that she has gone mad, or she is speaking with the devil.
