The novel starts with the discovery of a manuscript in an ancient language in the ruins of the Abbey of Kent. It turns out to be the personal recollections of a vampire. Since the vampire was a great composer he gained access to many royal houses and in the process realized that not all kings are strictly human. He also encounters a totally new species of vampires that are trying to exterminate the traditional vampires as well as his greatest nemesis, human made androids that cannot be defeated by a vampire. The book is also a steamy love story between the composer turned vampire and the seductive vampiress that had turned him many centuries ago.
