The Reckoning Storm

Driving through the storm of the century was supposed to be the worst part of Dr. Sharon Ember’s night. Maneuvering her car through thick sheets of rain, gale force winds, and collapsed trees, Sharon convinced herself that as long as she made it to the hospital, as long as she got inside, she would be safe. But little did she know that what lurked inside was far more horrible and terrifying than any hurricane. Now, as the sole doctor in labor & delivery, backed by a skeleton crew of staff, Sharon will not only have to deal with a frightened teenage girl’s pregnancy, the girl’s anxious mother and suspicious uncle, but also with Sharon’s own nightmarish visions of something malicious haunting the dark hallways of the hospital; an apparition whose evil nature is only matched by Sharon’s fears that something just as vile and depraved is boiling up inside of her, waiting to explode. The Reckoning Storm, Jonathan T. Wolf’s third story, is a psychological horror fable that explores the deep, malignant effects of trauma, isolation, and alienation between our families, our loved ones, and ourselves. As a bonus, Jonathan is adding to this edition his new short story, “The Human Condition,” published for the first time. Based on our global fight with the Covid-19 virus, “The Human Condition” posits a dark vision of the future where surviving infection means shifting our ways of understanding who we are, and what we are capable of becoming.
