When James Astley goes to Breydon Hall to spend Christmas with an old military friend of his now deceased father, things are not what he had expected. Driving through deep snow into the village of Breydon he accidentally knocks down a small girl. Horrified by what has happened he is shocked that the girl's parents seem unconcerned, even grateful. But he is about to discover something even stranger about the village: there is holly and mistletoe, trees with baubles, lights and tinsel - but there are no children. In the bleak snow covered landscape of the Norfolk fens, something is happening out on the marshes. His hosts aren't telling and the village has closed ranks. James Astley meets a wall of silence - but he is determined to uncover the truth.
