The day the world ends starts just like every other day. Its soles scraped the ground as it shuffled along beside the lake. The boots on its feet were more weight than its rotting muscles could fully lift. Still, it shuffled on, drawn. The fence ran all the way to the water. There was a large hole close to the shore squeezing through all the dead pulled to this place. The thing shuffled among the others until the boots it could no longer lift snagged on a root. The thing fell and landed face first on the ground. Before it could lift its head the others were already walking on top of it, passing over it as it lay there. Its skin cracked and split under the footsteps, its torso mashed as the brittle ribs snapped like dry twigs. The rot inside the compressing cavity exploded out the things mouth. The bones of the spine began to separate under the plodding heals and the skin around it’s abdomen split open. The thing grabbed the dirt in front of it with fingers that were little more that skin sheathed bones and pulled itself forward. The last bit of tissue holding it together gave way and the thing pulled free from the trampling feet, leaving its lower half behind.Left for Dead is Book 16 of the Marionette Zombie Series by SB Poe
