Cargo ship Fiona, loaded with rice and sailing to the African port of Matadi, is attacked by pirates on the Congo River. During the attack, the grandson of old shaman Mogamba – Totole, who leads the pirates, dies by misfortunate accident in the ship. Chieftain Kukele succeeds to convince the shaman that the white seamen were to blame for Totole’s death. Mogamba makes a decision to avenge the death of his grandson by black magic, with the help of the evil spirit Vuvude. Mogamba sneaks on board the ship in Matadi. He succeeds to take a personal belonging from each seaman on board, with the exception of the young chief mate Miroslav. The shaman returns to his village in the jungle and bewitches the whole crew to death. In the meanwhile, the ship sails from Matadi to Brazil. The black magic begins to act on board the ship. During the voyage a succession of events occurs, in which nearly all seamen find their death. Finally, the ship’s engine room catches fire and the flames consume the whole ship. The chief mate and another seaman save themselves in a life raft. After three days in the sea, Miroslav sees that he is left alone. A clerk dies in Port Matadi. Mogamba realizes that he has made a mistake when taking the seamen’s personal possessions and this goes against the rules of black magic. The evil spirit Vudude does not forgive the shaman his mistake. In a month, another merchant vessel, Azalia, finds the life raft with the survivor Miroslav. But Miroslav is in full amnesia. He does not remember who he is or what he is. Only the notes in his personal notebook reveal the horrible fate of Fiona.
