Fans of Beautiful Creatures will fall head over heels for Glass Heart by Amy Garvey, with its blend of breathless suspense, passionate romance, and magic. In Cold Kiss, Wren Darby learned she had powers strong enough to bring her dead boyfriend back to life. She thought she had to keep these powers a secret from everyone, until she met Gabriel, a mind reader who instantly learned her deepest secret. In the sequel, Glass Heart, Wren is torn between her love for Gabriel and the rush of exploring her powers. When Gabriel warns Wren that her powers are getting out of control, Wren begins spending more time with Bay and Fiona, whose magic is wild, exhilarating—and dangerous. And by the time Wren realizes Gabriel was right, she may already have lost him.
From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Teens who enjoyed Cold Kiss (HarperCollins, 2011), a surprisingly contemplative, sad reflection on first love and sudden death, will likely find this sequel to be just as engaging. From the dizzying excitement of flying to the marvel of creating a beautiful snowfall, Wren Darby is finally beginning to enjoy her growing supernatural abilities. Her power is the one thing that she can't share with her best friends. Her boyfriend, Gabriel, who can read minds, is uncomfortable with her talents, driving her toward the dangerous, magical duo Bay and Fiona. Wren also has to deal with her younger sister, who is just coming to terms with her own secret powers. As Wren engages with Bay and Fiona in spite of Gabriel's warnings, she soon realizes that she may be getting in over her head and just might lose Gabriel in the process. However, with the help of her friends and family, she learns that magic isn't the only thing that makes her special. Garvey's lively writing exhibits pleasing emotion and dazzling imagery. However, teens who have not read the first book might be a little lost in this one.-Krista Welz, The North Bergen Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2011. Wren knows her abilities are tinged with danger--knows how easy it is to lose control--but she can't resist the intoxicating rush. And now that she has Gabriel by her side, someone who knows what she can do--what she has done--she finally feels free to be herself. But as Wren explores the possibilities of her simmering powers, Gabriel starts pushing her away. Telling her to be careful. Telling her to stop. The more he cautions her, the more determined Wren becomes to prove that she can handle things on her own.
