The town was known for its oak trees and old mills, which made it famous for its businesses and restaurants. The other side of the town was where the homes were located. On Oak Mills Road were four boys who lived next door to each other. They had been friends since the first grade, and they always had a good time together. There was one thing the boys wanted, but it had never worked out. They always wanted to have an adventure. They didn't go to college because they worked and wanted to save for the adventure of a lifetime. They were all twenty years old and were all only children.Danny Hays had black hair and blue eyes and stood six feet tall. He worked at the Oak Mill grocery store. He had always wanted to go to China to see the Great Wall. Bobby Brown was also six feet tall, with brown eyes and black hair. He worked for the local landscaping business, and he had always wanted to go to Africa to hunt. Jeff Casey had no hair, and from time to time he wore reading glasses. He stood at five-foot-eleven, had brown eyes, and worked for a body shop. He had always wanted to go out west to drive on Route 66 because he was a car person. Adam Holmes stood at six-foot-one and had blond hair with blue eyes. He fixed computers in a computer store and had always wanted to go to Europe to see the sights. It was Sunday, September 30, and the boys had the day off. Danny was in his bedroom looking at his cell phone to see what the weather was going to be. He noticed that it was going to be sunny and sixty degrees out, so he decided to call up the gang to see if they wanted to hang out. He hoped they would have an adventure that day.He called up Adam to see if he wanted to hang out and if he had something in mind. Adam, who was in his bedroom, saw that Danny was phoning him and answered to see what he wanted."Well, hello, Danny," Adam said."How are you doing?" Danny asked."I'm doing well, and thank you for asking," Adam said."Hey, Adam, since today we all have the day off, do you want to hang out?""That sounds great to me," Adam said."What do you want to do?" Danny asked Adam."I don't know. Have you called up Jeff and Bobby?""You are the first one I called.""Why don't you call Bobby and Jeff to see what they want to do? I'm fine with whatever they want to do.""Very well," Danny said. "I'll call you right back to let you know what the plan is for today."Danny called up Bobby and on the third ring. Bobby answered to see what Danny wanted."How are you doing, Danny?" Bobby said."Fine," Danny replied."Are we going to do anything today?" Bobby asked."That's why I'm calling you — to see what you want to do today," Danny said."You know what, Danny? Why don't we all meet at your house at eleven? When we're all together we will see what we all want to do.""See you at eleven," Danny said. After Danny hung up, he called Adam and told him to be at his house at eleven, and Adam was okay with that.Danny called Jeff to let him know the plan for the day."Well, hello, Danny," Jeff said."Hello, Jeff," Danny said."What's going on today?" Jeff asked."Come to my house at eleven, and the four of us will see what we are going to do today.""See you at eleven," Jeff said and hung up.Danny left his bedroom to tell his parents what he was going to do. He walked into the kitchen and noticed that his mom and dad were sitting in their favorite chairs as they read the morning newspaper.Danny walked in, looked at them, and said, "Good morning, Mom and Dad."His dad looked at him. Arnie, who was sixty years old, with no hair and blue eyes, stood at six-foot-three and worked at the tire rack store. He asked, "How are you doing this morning?""I'm doing well," Danny replied. His mom looked at him. Teri was fifty-nine years old, with blond hair and blue eyes as well. She stood at five-foot-six and worked at the library. She asked, "What are your plans for today?""At eleven my friends are coming over to see what we're going to do.""Very well," his mom said.Danny walked out of the kitchen to get ready for the day. Once he was done, he went to the family room and waited for his friends to come over.Jeff was ready for the day and decided to let his parents know what he was going to do. He walked out of his room and headed toward the kitchen to see if his parents were there. When he walked in, he saw his mom and dad standing in front of the counter making their coffee. Jeff said, "Good morning, Mom and Dad."Jeff's dad looked at him. Bob was sixty-three years old, with gray hair and brown eyes. He was six feet tall and worked at the water township. "Are you going to do anything today?" he asked his son."That's why I'm here, to let both of you know that at eleven I'm going to Danny's house so we can see what we're going to do."His mom looked at him. Joy was fifty-seven years old, with blond hair and brown eyes as well, and she worked at the truck stop in the office. "Have fun!" she told her son.Jeff walked out of the kitchen and went to the garage to look at his tools before he headed over to Danny's.Bobby was ready for the day and was in the living room with his parents to tell them what his plans were for the day."Hey, Mom and Dad," Bobby said."Yes, Bobby," his dad said. Jack was sixty-one years old, with gray hair and a matching beard and blue eyes. He owned a tree service. He looked at his son and said, "What are you doing today?""At eleven I'm going over to Danny's to see what we're going to do."His mom looked at him. Susan, who was also sixty-one years old with gray hair and brown eyes, also worked at the tree service taking phone calls. "Have a good time with your friends.""We will," Bobby said as he walked out of living room.He walked back into his room to check the dirt he had taken from work. He wanted to make sure it was okay before he went over to Danny's house.Adam was ready for the day and was in front of his computer to see what was going on in the news. When he was done, he walked out of his room to let his parents know what he was going to do that day. He walked into the kitchen and saw his mom and dad as they were sitting down and drinking coffee. "How are you two doing?" he asked. His dad looked at him. Dennis was fifty-eight years old with no hair and had a mustache and blue eyes. He stood at six-foot-one and worked at the hardware store. "Doing anything today with your friends?""That is why I'm here — to let you both know that at eleven I'm going to Danny's to see what we're going to do today."His mom looked at him. Lois was also fifty-eight years old, with red hair and brown eyes. She stood at five-foot-six and worked at the bank. "Have a great time," she said.Adam walked out of the kitchen and went to the den to watch TV until it was time to go over to Danny's house.Back over at Danny's house, he was waiting for his friends to come over. He looked at the window and saw his friends walking toward the front door. Danny was happy to see them. He walked over to the door and opened it up, and Jeff, Bobby, and Adam walked in."Why don't we head into my room?" Danny told his friends. They all walked into Danny's room, and Jeff closed the door.Bobby said, "What do you want to do today? Well, Bobby?" Danny looked at him. "You were the one who wanted us to come over to my house to see what we want to do.""What do you want to do?" Jeff asked Danny."You know what?" Danny said. "Why don't we head over to the mills?""Why do you want to go to the mills?" Adam asked."Today is a nice day out, and no one goes there. And besides, maybe today is the day we will have our adventure.""That never works," Bobby said.Adam looked at his friends."Danny wants to go to the mills, then that is what we're going to do, and after when we're done, we'll go and get some lunch.""Sounds good to me," Jeff said."Let's do it," Bobby said.Bobby, Adam, and Jeff reached into their pockets for their phones, and then they texted their parents to let them know what they were going to do. Danny opened up his bedroom door and walked out to tell his parents what he and his friends were going to do. He walked into the living room and saw both of them sitting on their favorite chairs watching TV. Danny looked at them and said, "We're heading to the mills, and then we're going to get some lunch.""Have a great time," his dad said.Danny and his friends headed toward the front door. Bobby opened it up and walked out. Danny closed the door, looked at his friends, and said, "I will drive you to the mills."They all hopped into Danny's truck, a 2013 Ford f-250 with a power v-8 engine with diesel that he had bought a year before. Once they got inside, Danny started up his truck and took off. As they headed toward the mills, they drove through downtown. On the left, Jeff saw the Oak Mill Garden Center, known for its fruits, garden tools, plants, flowers, and holiday decorations. As they passed by, the workers were getting some hay ready to put the pumpkins on. Jeff said to his friends, "The workers are getting the hay ready to put the pumpkins on.""That's great to hear," Danny said."You said it," Bobby agreed."You know what that means?" Adam asked his friends."Why, yes. Halloween is coming, and that is our favorite time of the year," Danny said."The best thing I heard today," Jeff said.Danny was driving past the restaurants when Bobby noticed a Chinese restaurant and said, "After we're done at the mills, let's get Chinese.""Sounds good to me," Danny said."Fine with me," Jeff agreed."I have a taste for Chinese," Adam told his friends. After Danny drove past the restaurants, they saw the Oak Mill Haunted Mansion on the right side. Bobby looked at it and said, "Can't wait to go there so that we can scare each other.""You got that right," Danny said to Bobby."That is a great place," Jeff told his friends."You said it," Adam said in agreement.Once Danny drove past the Haunted Mansion, on the left side he turned and saw the signs pointing to the mills. When the boys saw the mills, Danny drove into the parking lot and noticed that no one was there. They got out of the truck and looked at the mills. The mills had been in Oak Mill for over a hundred years, opened by the founder of the town, Henry Oak, to make flour. The mills were closed when he died, but they remained a town landmark. There were eight mills, and they were all safe to walk in. "Why don't we all walk around to see what we can find?" Danny suggested. As the boys walked on the left side of one of the mills, a crow looked down at them. As Jeff was walking around, he looked up and saw the crow. It was looking right at him and his friends."Hey, guys," Jeff said."What is it?" Danny asked."Look over there. There's a crow looking right at us.""Well, it looks like we're not the only ones here. There is a crow looking at us," Adam said with a laugh. The boys headed toward one of the mills, and before Jeff walked in he looked over to where the crow had been and noticed it was gone."What are you looking at?" Bobby asked."Nothing," Jeff replied. As the boys entered the mill and looked around, they saw the stuff that people who had worked at the mill had used when it was operating. The boys walked out and headed toward another mill. This time the crow was at the mill and was going to play a trick on the boys. The crow used magic to open up a door. Danny looked over and saw a door in the mill opening by itself."That door is opening all by itself!" he shouted.Bobby, Jeff, and Adam looked at the door and saw it open."Are you sure?" Bobby asked."I know what I saw," Danny told his friends."Why don't we go inside to see what's going on," Bobby said.As the boys headed into the mill, the crow flew out of one of the windows. When they got inside, they saw that no one was there.Danny saw the open window, so he walked over and looked out. No one was around. Then he turned and saw his friends, who were looking at him like he was crazy."I know what I saw," Danny told his friends."You know what?" Bobby asked."Why don't we just get out and get some lunch," Bobby suggested. The boys walked out of the mill and headed back to Danny's truck. As they were walking, Jeff turned around and noticed the crow looking at him and his friends again."He's back," Jeff said."Who's back?" Adam asked."The crow we saw when we got here," Jeff said. The boys looked at the crow and walked back to Danny's truck. They drove off to get something to eat. Once they got to the Chinese place, Adam looked at his friends and said, "Our adventure failed!""Don't worry about it," Jeff told Adam."At least we tried," Danny said."Yes, we did," Bobby agreed. The boys walked into the restaurant and ordered their food. When they were done, they paid the bill and headed back to Danny's truck. They got in the truck, and Danny drove off. He said to his friends, "Don't worry that we didn't have an adventure. Tomorrow is October first, and we all know what that means. Halloween is next month, and something tells me that we will have our adventure."Once they arrived back at Danny's house, they all got out and headed back to their homes. Little did the boys know that the crow had followed them to see where they lived. Once the crow saw where they lived, it flew away. Danny, Jeff, Adam, and Bobby were sad that they hadn't had an adventure!CHAPTER 2The Ghost Puts Letters on Their BedsThe next day was Monday. Jeff woke up at 7:30 in the morning and had an hour and a half to get ready for work. He shut off his alarm, got out of bed, and headed toward the bathroom to get ready for the day. He then walked back into his bedroom and grabbed his cell-phone to see if any of his friends had texted him while he was sleeping. Jeff always turned off his phone for the night because the noise coming from the phone kept him up. He turned it on and noticed that none of his friends had texted him.Jeff looked over to the wall and noticed that he had to change his calendar because it was October 1. He was happy that October had arrived because it was his favorite month. After changing his calendar, he headed toward the kitchen to see if his mom and dad were there. When he walked into the kitchen, he saw his parents sitting on their favorite chairs as they were eating breakfast. "Good morning, Mom and Dad," Jeff said. His mother looked at him."How are you doing?" she asked."I'm doing just fine, and thanks for asking.""Are you going to eat anything?" his dad asks, looked at his dad."You know that I'm not a breakfast eater, but thanks for asking." Jeff looked at the time and noticed that he had less than an hour to get to work. He headed to the garage to get his tools ready before heading to his job.Over at the Hays' house, Danny was up and ready for the day and was on his cell phone to see what was going on in the news. When he was done, he headed out of his bedroom to see if his parents were up and ready for the day. As he walked toward their bedroom, he noticed that they were not there. Then he headed toward the family room.As he was walking toward the family room, he heard his dad talking to his mother as he approached them. When he entered the family room, he saw his mom and dad watching TV. Danny looked at them and asked, "How are you two doing?" His mother looked at him."We're fine," she answered."What about you, Danny?" his dad asked."I'm doing fine.""Are you going to eat any breakfast?" his mother asked."Thanks, but no thanks," Danny said.Danny walked out of the family room and headed back to his bedroom, to charge his cell phone before going to work.Adam was ready for the day and was working on his computer. After he was done, he headed to the kitchen to see if his parents were there. When he walked in, he saw them drinking coffee. Adam looked at them and said, "Good morning, Mom and Dad. How are you guys doing?""Your mother and I are both doing well," his dad answered."How are you doing?" his mother asked."The same goes here."Adam walked out of the kitchen and headed back to his bedroom. He did a little work on his computer, and when he was done, he was going to listen to some music until it was time to head out.Back over at the Browns' house, Bobby was up and looking at the dirt he had taken home over the weekend. After he was done, he walked out of his bedroom and headed toward his parents' bedroom to see if they were there. He noticed their bedroom door was open and realized they were in the family room. He then headed into the room, where he saw his parents. "How are you two doing?" Bobby asked them."We're doing just fine," his dad answered."That's good to hear," Bobby said."How are you doing?" his mother asked."I'm doing well," Bobby said to her.Bobby walked out of the family room and headed back to his bedroom to get the dirt and to make sure his cell phone was charged before heading off to work.
