Amy Clark leads a routine, anonymous life. Orphaned, she manages to scrape by working in a hotel in a large city. One day, she begins to receive messages intended for someone named Nicole Silsbury. Over time, Amy's bills and personal documentation bear the name of this woman. Friends and coworkers call her Nikki. Amy assumes Nicole's identity. She also discovers that Nicole possess a rather checkered past. Amy now must adjust to her new life, dealing with a variety of unknown people.
