The death of his teenage daughter and subsequent divorce had taken a toll on Deputy Allen Stockton and he had been forced to take a six month leave of absence. On his first night back on patrol he was sent to investigate a teenage girl wondering down the road in a thunderstorm. When he arrived he discovered the girl had been severely beaten. He put her in his patrol unit and took her to an emergency clinic. He went inside to get a nurse and when they returned the girl had vanished. He immediately went back up the mountain and found the girl’s dead body. The coroner on the scene determined she’d been murdered and had been dead for at least twelve hours. Now Deputy Allen Stockton was the prime suspect in the girl’s murder. Who, or what, did he bring down off that mountain. Was it a ghost? Was it even real? He wasn’t sure. Lately he hadn’t been sure about a lot of things. Except for those whispers he keeps hearing at night. He knows they’re real. And they’re scaring him to death.
