Three years on from their meeting with the Scapper Queen and their struggle with Bishop Vermilus to safeguard the Spirit Gateways, Agatha and Archimedes have become part of a small group training to be Arbiters. The school is discovered by an evil Abbess who has acquired the Paradoxery and hopes to increase her power through murdering the students. They flee to safety, pursued by both the Abbess and William the Conqueror’s Norman soldiers, but finally realise that both must be confronted if the Spirit Gateways are to remain safe.
