My story must begin like all stories must, at the beginning. The beginning was my birth in the winter of the year1835. Hugh Blackthorn my father was a man of forty-five when, he took to wife Beth Watson a young girl of eighteen. My mother by all accounts was with child by my father. For no other reason, they became husband and wife. My mother was at her death a beautiful woman. So, I have no doubt she was beautiful at eighteen. Her hair was black as a Raven’s wing. It flowed down her back held in place by a red ribbon. Her complexion was like fresh cream, her eyes green, and her lips full and red. At least it is the way, she appeared in her painted portrait hanging in the grand hall. Hugh Blackthorn was the master of Blackthorn castle. At forty-five, he was a robust man with a love for women cards and the blood sport of hunting. He installed his new bride as mistress of Blackthorn castle. Then he immediately left her alone for over a month. While, he gambled and sampled the whorehouses of London.
