It is Christmas eve in the ancient town of Beodricsworth in East Anglia. As the town settles into Yuletide, several friends witness a ghostly apparition walk through a churchyard seen from an attic window in the home of Algernon Hare. What follows is an adventure to determine who the ghost is; this includes the local eccentric retired philosopher (Cornelius Lock), a brooding sexton (Hailstone), an academic historian cat from Oxford (Verlaine) and young Emily Phipps (friend of Algernon Hare). The tale is told around a yule winter landscape in a place where the 'old ways' still exist.
