The sequel to Bill Smith and the Haunted Escapologist. Jokin’ Jake has as good as admitted he was trying to kill the Great Gonzini, otherwise known as Eric Thompson by sabotaging the props in his escapologist act. The trouble for the local representative of the police force who arrested him is who is going to believe an admission of guilt provoked by a possessed medium at a séance? And Jokin’ Jake has employed a very expensive smartarse Barrister who is set to make his name with a very public trial and by proving it was all just a publicity stunt. And who is giving the evidence? The medium or the Voodoo Witch that possessed her? And why is Jokin’ Jake seemingly content to be in prison awaiting trial? Could it be the series of murders of people connected to him? And then there is the attempt on his life while in prison, apparently by the prison nurse who was supposed to be cutting his toenails. Bill Smith assists the redoubtable and phlegmatic Chief Inspector Williams as he continues his enquiries and finally Jokin’ Jake is brought to trial with somewhat unexpected results. And Rose Primrose the only genuine medium that Bill Knows (and doesn’t believe in psychic powers anyway) generally makes things tricky by consulting the astral plane.
