In the village of Villabrín it is getting dark and, on a nearby road, a young man lurks, hidden in the shadows. Hearing another young man approaching, he comes out of his hiding place to confront him. The one who was waiting, named Juan, reproaches the newcomer, named Quin, for having taken Anita, the girl that the whole town knew was the object of his love, as his girlfriend. He then tries to make Quin desist from his courtship, which he considers purely the fruit of self-love and, failing to do so, the two engage in a duel to the death, which far from the romantic elegance of guns and godfathers, is settled in the terms of a vulgar knife fight. Some time later, the day the winner marries Anita, the remorse becomes unbearable.
