Ellie has just moved to a new town in Scotland during the summer holidays with her dad, who takes on a job as caretaker at Aboyne Academy. They left their old address in Edinburgh, after a burglary, which still gives Ellie nightmares. Ellie’s French mother died when she was two and her dad never speaks about her, which upsets her. She gets a Facebook friend request from a mysterious girl called Harriet, who she later discovers has been dead for a month. She comes face to face with her and a classroom full of ghost pupils from different eras in history. She joins in their classes and befriends Taryn, who committed suicide due to bullying. Taryn takes revenge on Bruno, one of the main bullies, by getting him suspended. Life gets better when she meets John, a boy from school. Ellie’s father starts a relationship with Sarah Clark, a teacher, who turns out to be John's mum. Her dad's not happy when he finds out that Ellie and John are in a relationship and tells her she's too young to have a boyfriend. Things get even more awkward when Ellie's dad announces his engagement to John's mum. She wrestles with her feelings, and feels her dad is betraying her mum's memory. She turns to her ghost friends for help.
