Classic Whitehawk adventure... An impetuous young monk, talented at the quarterstaff, has become bored of monastery life. No sea-raiders threaten the monastery anymore; fighter-monks are not needed. Brother Jacob longs for travel and adventure in realms where sword and sorcery hold sway...rather than, well, staff and scripture. So he goes off with the circus, Soon he is longing for the comforts of monastery again as he slavishly labors under his new masters as baggage-boy.He manages an escape, entering the mysterious forest that stretches far North from his monastery. He stumbles into to a band of real adventurers camping in the woods, dangerous mountaineers, among whose members is a mad dwarf who envies the raw power of the old heathenry. He captures Jacob claiming him as an offering, a human sacrifice upon ancient pagan altar stones. A shadow appears to them pointing an accusing finger. After all that mess Jacob hurries back to the quasi-safety of the monastery and his religious brothers. The struggle against evil, warned of in scripture, is all too real. A malicious and dangerous conspiracy is afoot, plot of the shadow-world and its high druid, the Dire of Melancholy, enemy of all that is holy. The Friars of Whigg, ecclesiastical competitors to the monks, would to counter the Unholy Archon. Fight him with ancient battle-magic: resurrect a troop of ancient wizards from beneath the ruins of Nystol, and with their famous magic assault the troll-horde.But is it right to invoke the power of Resurrection on the decaying wizards of old? Would that not misuse the miracle-gift of God, and profane the sacred faith? As suspicion and fear engulf the monastery, Jacob is accused of arcane summoning. So he throws in with that renegade band of mountaineers: "The Valraphs", to scale the walls of the Dire's impregnable fortress , and infiltrate.Led by a brave but hot-headed amazon, they set out into a world of magic and wonder, a world at the brink of a new dawn of evil...and his contest of wits with the Dire of Melancholy himself, Jacob could become the dupe by which all the world is deceived, and forfeit even his immortal soul.(Includes ten illustrations by author)
