A collection of spine-tingling thrillers perfect for the campfire tells how different ghosts often return to this world for love or revenge.
From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-- A collection of 13 ghostly tales with the themes of love and revenge. Most are sad, and many feature women who have been scorned and return for vengeance or those who have died waiting for their lovers. The locations vary, from Japan to Scotland to Manhattan, and most of these well-written, suitably creepy, and very short tales retain their timelessnes. As books on ghosts and love are perennial favorites (especially in this format, which has a high appeal for reluctant readers), so too will this one be. The cover is a wonderful added incentive, and will attract lots of readers. --Susan R. Farber, Ossining Public Library, NY:Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Kirkus Reviews
Cohen's Ghosts of War (1990) were men; here, women's ghosts comprise most of the cast--women who died betrayed or abandoned, by murder or accident; who returned for love, vengeance, or (in one case) jewelry. Most haunt the British Isles, Japan, or the US and date back no more than a century or two; the ``Headless Lover'' of Brooke End and New York's ``Empire State Building Ghost'' are of particularly recent vintage. Cohen's lucid style is well-suited to creating chills, and he seasons his narrative with an occasional grisly touch--``His face had become a mask of skin tightly stretched over a grinning skull.'' ``Put aside your doubts,'' he advises, ``and read on.'' Perhaps not at night. (Nonfiction. 11-13) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
