We try to teach our children the big lie that the world is a safe place. If we tell it enough times they will forget about their unreasonable fears and grow up to tell the same stories to their children. There's nothing under the bed. There's nothing in the closet. No boogeyman is coming to get you. Over time those fears will fade and be replaced by more mundane concerns, but there are many things children know that we have forgotten. They know that the world is full of possibility. They know that dreams can become reality. They know that there is something out there in the dark. They know that monsters eat people.
