The White People

A new edition of Welsh master-of-horror Arthur Machen's classic horror story, The White People, originally published in 1904 and then reprinted alongside other novellas in his collection The House of Souls. The White People is considered to be one of Arthur Machen's most ground-breaking and enduringly influential short works, having a direct impact on the development of the supernatural genre and effecting many other writers. In the words of one scholar, The White People "is probably the finest single supernatural story of the century, perhaps in the literature." In the words of another: "If I were to list the greatest supernatural short stories of all time, I would start with Arthur Machen’s 'The White People,' about a young girl’s unknowing initiation into an ancient, otherworldly cult." H. P. Lovecraft himself was a proponent of the work, writing that "Machen's narrative [is] a triumph of skillful selectiveness and restraint, accumulat[ing] enormous power as it flows on in a stream of innocent childish prattle."Arthur Machen (1863 – 1947) was the pen-name of Welsh writer Arthur Llewellyn Jones, one of the best known and most influential authors of supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction. He is best known for his novella The Great God Pan (1890), considered by many to the “best horror story in the English language.”
