Samantha and Lily were orphaned early in life and raised by their great grandmother, their only living relative besides their cousin Mallory who lives halfway across the continent and with whom they spend every summer and Christmas. So when Mallory vanishes while on a ski trip in Colorado and the local police deduce that the teen has run away with a new boyfriend, the sisters don't leave it to the private detective their grandmother hires to find their cousin. Instead they jump in the classic Jaguar they inherited from their mother and make a frenzied trip to the Rockie Mountains to look for Mallory themselves, where they find themselves in a village turned bizarre, somehow, with missing people, wildlife gone bold and brazen, a police department which is hostile, and an aunt who is of no help at all.
