Chaska Dalicor is visiting with her parents in the northern village of Frodenvaal when something brings all wildlife fleeing from an unexplored arctic region called the Faraway. Her faerie far-seeing ability detects what looks like fire deep in the Faraway – impossible in the midst of a desolation of snow and ice. Then the village is attacked by supernatural creatures they name ‘the frost riders’ wielding deadly ice lances. It is soon established that they come out of the far north, and so Chaska is joined by her pirate friends, Sojar and Captain Rath Meru, along with emissaries from Rhann, an elderly villager with experience of the Faraway – and Ebon, a prince of cats. Together they journey north, and into the unknown . . .
