Fiona McDowell is a six-year-old African-American girl from Brooklyn who moves to Upstate New York with her mom, dad, and baby brother Jamal in the spring of 1987. With a scar caused by a bullet on her left cheek, she has difficulty making friends when a small group of kids invites her into The Lonely Hearts Club. The club consists of other students who’ve had troubled pasts. They stick out in school and are made fun of for who they are. There is an Oneida Native American named Delsin. A boy named Samar from India. A girl from France known as Abella, a girl from Costa Rica, called Esteva. A girl from China known as Su and a poor white boy named Ajax, whose only family left is a drug-addicted mother. Together these kids brave the world of West Wolf where strange things happen and a legend of a Wendigo in the Western Woods behind Fiona’s house. Although every following chapter is four years later, in the end, we encounter The Lonely Hearts in 2007, trying to save the world from the powers of the Wendigo and their childhood friends who have become drunk with power.
